Abu Simbel

The temple of Abu Simbel is a spectacular sight.

Carved from the mountain between 1274 and 1244 BC it is the most spectacular monument of Ramses II, honouring his God Ra Horakhti and his queen, Nefertari.

This colossal structure was designed to capture the rays of the sun to illuminate the seated figure of the Pharaoh inside the sanctuary twice a year.

Remarkably, the entire temple was nearly completely buried in sand until it was rediscovered in 1813 by a Swiss explorer.

The impressive statues of Ramses II guard the entrance of the temple and overlook beautiful Lake Nasser.

A visit to Abu Simbel is simply breathtaking and not to be missed.
